Orihuela Costa

Our home: sixteen kilometres of blue-flag beaches, coves and year-round sunshine.

Costa Blanca · Alicante

Orihuela Costa is the southern stretch of the Alicante coastline and the place we now call home. It is really a string of neighbourhoods — Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Punta Prima, Campoamor, Villamartín — joined by a coastal path, a run of blue-flag beaches and more sunshine than anywhere we lived in Manchester.

It is unashamedly a resort coast, and that is exactly what makes it work with children: shallow sandy bays, lifeguards in season, easy parking out of high summer, playgrounds beside the sand and somewhere to eat within a few minutes' walk of every beach.

We moved here from Manchester in October 2025 and this page is the one we keep most up to date — everything below is somewhere we have actually taken the children.

Things to do

  • Walk the coastal path from Punta Prima to Cabo Roig — flat, paved and lined with coves
  • Spend a morning at Zenia Boulevard, the big open-air shopping centre
  • Take the short drive to Torrevieja's pink salt lake for sunset
  • Boat trip or paddleboard hire from Cabo Roig marina
  • Sunday lunch in the old town of Orihuela, twenty minutes inland

Best beaches

  • Playa La Zenia — sandy, lifeguarded and the easiest with young children
  • Cala Cerrada and Cala Capitán — small rocky coves, brilliant for snorkelling
  • Playa Flamenca — wide sand, showers and beach bars
  • Punta Prima — long and sandy with a big promenade
  • Cala Bosque (La Caleta) — sheltered and shallow

Family activities

  • The coastal path with scooters and bikes — mostly flat the whole way
  • Playgrounds at Punta Prima and La Zenia, both right beside the sand
  • Rock pooling at Cala Cerrada at low tide
  • Aquopolis Torrevieja water park, fifteen minutes away
  • Sunday morning bike ride and churros at Cabo Roig

Restaurants

  • Beachfront chiringuitos at Cabo Roig for grilled fish and rice
  • Menú del día in Villamartín Plaza — the best value lunch on the coast
  • Tapas around Punta Prima's promenade in the evening
  • Ice cream at La Zenia after the beach — a family tradition now

Markets

  • Playa Flamenca market, Saturday morning — the biggest on this stretch of coast
  • Zenia Boulevard artisan market on selected weekends
  • Torrevieja Friday market for fruit, veg and cheap beach kit

Hidden gems

  • The tiny cove below Cabo Roig castle, best in the hour before sunset
  • The pine woods behind Campoamor for shade on a hot afternoon
  • Watching the salt boats on the Torrevieja lagoon from the eastern shore

Walks

  • Punta Prima to Cabo Roig coastal path — about 5km one way, pushchair-friendly
  • La Glea to Campoamor along the sand at low tide
