The Costa Brava is rockier than our home coast, so the family-friendly beaches are the ones that are sheltered, shallow at the edge and easy to reach without a cliff scramble.
Sandy and easy
- Platja de Llafranc — a neat crescent of sand with a promenade
- Platja Gran, Tossa de Mar — big, sandy and lifeguarded
- Platja de Pals — enormous, dune-backed and rarely crowded
- La Fosca, Palamós — shallow and sheltered
Coves worth the effort
- Aiguablava, Begur — clear water and gentle entry
- Port Bo, Calella de Palafrugell — shingle, but calm and lovely
Practical notes
- Cove car parks fill before 10am in July and August
- Many coves have no bar — take a picnic and water
